Mammals

Marine Mammals | Terrestrial Mammals | Invasive Mammals

Because of their limited dispersal abilities, mammals are rather poorly represented on oceanic islands like San Salvador. Marine mammals certainly find their way in and about San Salvador, but unfortunately, they are rather uncommon. By virtue of their flight, bats are fairly well represented with a small number of species present. Sadly, a number of additional mammals have been introduced by humans. Many of these (such as the ubiquitous rats) have invasive characteristics, and these have been destructive to the environment.

Here, we will describe a number of native and introduced species.

Invasive Mammals

Other mammals which may be present on San Salvador do not belong there. Animals like dogs, cats, rats and raccoons can cause considerable harm to native animal populations.
